About this celestial object

NGC 457—the Owl Cluster—winks from Cassiopeia.

The striking open cluster NGC 457 is also called the Owl Cluster and the E.T. Cluster: two bright stars read as eyes, flanked by a loose swarm.

Barely 18° above the horizon, the cluster lies deep in the Milky Way band; the 250‑mm wide field shows it embedded in a rich star field.

A series of short exposures brings out the colors of the bright stars without overpowering the surroundings.
