NGC2261

NGC 2261, Hubble’s Variable Nebula, fans out as a ghostly reflection in Monoceros.
This reflection nebula changes appearance on timescales of weeks—shifting shadows in the dust cone alter its form.
Despite its low altitude, the sharply tapering tip with the fanned tail stands out strikingly.
A good 94 minutes total exposure at 250 mm f/5 brings out the delicate brightness gradients.
